Helvetireader Suite

minify:

This un-official suite of various web apps customizations turn a web app into a beautiful minimal application. It all started with Helvetireader by Jon Hicks, since then various web developers have made “extensions” of it using other web apps such as Twitter and Google Calendar. Here is a list:

Unfortunately, those are the only ones. I have heard rumors of Helvetoogle for the Google homepage and Helvetibook for Facebook, but nothing to show for it. I actually have been working on them.

What is in your Pockets?

It’s not a trick question, when you are on the go, whether it be at work, school or around the park, what do you keep in your pocket? Before I really became minimal I would ALWAYS have my iPod touch, cell phone, Apple earbuds, my huge wallet, and my big keychain. Now I just bring along my binder clip wallet that is attached to my 2 item key chain via lanyard, and my cell phone. Although lately I have been bringing along a pen and my moleskin in my back pocket.

Too many people have too much stuff on them throughout the day, such as:

Re-evaluate what you really need in your pockets. That iPod you have, how many times do you actually use it when you are on the go? Those mystery keys on your keychain, why do you have them? Get rid of those old membership cards or empty gift cards. Think about what you actually use throughout the day, get rid of things you do not use on a daily basis. Only bring along things that you know you will use.

My Safari Setup
I don’t like to have my browsing too cluttered, I like to get as much space as I can. All of my most visited websites are bookmarked so I just hit their hotkeys to go (example: CMD+2). Also I just have to hit CMD+L to make open a location, so it works out pretty well.
My homepage is just a live clock and date, along with a simple google search input, that I created. Click here to see it.

Take a look at the picture of my desktop above, a bit disturbing eh? This isn’t exactly minimal but it illustrates the power of old hardware. My first, and only, mac is a Titanium Onyx Powerbook G4, with a stunning 667mhz CPU speed and 512mb of RAM yet it still runs 10.4.11 quite nicely. I enlarged my dock so that you could see what all I am running. I will admit that I barely ever have to run both Adium and Skype. Except for Twitterrific all of the apps you see running are usually always running, with Photoshop in and out. Don’t you just love how I only have 15mb of free RAM?
P.S. Photoshop sucks, I hate Adobe. Pixelmator all the way.
